I'm a Year Two student from Senior High, written many essays and novelettes, ranging from critical to comical ones, with a style that is distinctively mine, but regarding this one that I'm writing now about Wu Yifan, I can only say that, maybe it is better to write it plainly and straight to the point. What I am about to say, is based on the Wu Yifan whom I know, it is from my own perspective, he belongs to everyone, I can't say that I know him very well, but I love him the way everyone else who loves him does.


The most undenial thing about him would be his looks, many would call it "handsome", everytime I'm refreshing Weibo I'd also say "handsome", but in fact I feel that the word "handsome" is too shallow, some people only have a beautiful outer appearance, but empty inside. He has a heart that is unstoppably warm, one of the many reasons why his numerous fans can't leave him.

The warmth he exuberates at the airport- specially buying a luggage to contain the presents that his fans gave, the way he leads the group, the image of him holding in his tears during the award presentation, the look of him lowering his head to look after the members, the good leader who exchanges opinions with the crew softly, too many, I can't finish talking about, or write. How he changes from a bitchface guy, to how we fans want him to be like, there are also fans who are weak-hearted that left the fandom, and most of all, there will be fans who only love him for his looks, but regardless of all these, he keeps on trying to work hard, harder, and even harder, to become better.

In terms of variety sense, he goes along with the host and tempo of the show, everytime when requested to do something that is difficult in his position, he will always smile shyly saying, "Maybe next time." Also showing off his drawing and writing skills on variety programmes, telling us "I, have a good handwriting and I am not bad at drawing."

Fluent in Chinese, English, Cantonese and Korean, but he is very modest, never showing off, always in low profile, not snatching the limelight off anyone.

At the airport, he knows that fans are tired and having it tough, despite being squeezed and stuck in the jam, he doesn't flare up, and kindheartedly tells his fans to be careful, meanwhile, with apologetic looks on his face while saying sorry to the workers that he caused the jam, and also taking care of his friend who came to fetch him.

Whenever there's any festivals or during the New Year, he never fails to send his regards to the fans, writing a "love letter" for them.

I just want to tell him: I like you in every way, just like how you like every single one of us, you don't need to cater to us, you just need to keep flying, chasing after your expectations and dreams. The most blissful thing for me, isn't seeing you sending a flying kiss to the camera or any sorts of fanservice. To me, your success, seeing how you, despite all the obstacles, still managing to soar up, step by step, with determination. It is then, when you shine the brightest, it is then, when Wu Yifan is the most handsome.

You are on a bridge, looking at the scenery, while those who are looking at the scenery, are looking at you.

You just need to care about bringing your members with you with your flight, I will be forever looking at you from the back.


He is a Chinese, he is working hard in Korea. He first knew Zhang Yixing, he protected Zhang Yixing like how a elder brother protects the younger one.

He is tall, even though he has a model-built, able to pull off all sorts of clothings, his dancing is the most off-balance one in the team, because of his longs arms and legs. This is of no doubt, something troublesome, but he pulled through it in the four years. Four years, a long time, but he just mention casually about his trainee years.

Was it tough? The uncountable moments of standing on your own, pulling a luggage while returning back to China occasionally. He cried at the awards ceremony, with Zhang Yixing crying on his left, he has to stop himself from crying while taking care of him. We all know, Kris is someone who doesn't like to cry in the team. But he did, just after watching one video. Is it exhausting, is it tiring, have he recalled the difficulties he encountered in the past? Was he overwhelmed by the concern and warmth the fans have given him? I saw online that many fans have cried because of him, I didn't, my heart just felt really wrenched looking at him, thinking, "Yup, this is the Wu Yifan whom I really love."

What I see, is his success now, no, to him these are just temporary, this entertainment industry is too harsh, competitive and the risk of getting kicked out is high. But to step on the global stage, like his Super Junior seniors, to be able to write a historic moment, is his dream.

He has developed a strong character since young, knowing that he has to take care of his mother, and thus made himself a stronger person. He used his most, most determined look to hold everything together. He understands the meaning of responsibility, he likes girls who are filial and are devoted to the family. See, the first thing he said isn't "pretty" or "cute". He is someone who can't forget the past, that black bag, he kept using and using, even if it is torn.

We call him the king, the one with godly features. But ultimately, he is a 23-year old boy. Loves to eat, difficult to wake up in the morning, someone who does aegyo, and someone who misses home.

As ordinary as us.


This is my first time liking an artiste, not because of his looks, but his inner character. I like every member of EXO, but the first time I saw Wu Yifan, I got caught by his smiling self. Even if 20 years have passed, my own children don't know the story of EXO, don't know the existence of Wu Yifan, I will still proudly hold up their albums, his photos, and tell my kids, your mum, when she was younger, liked this group, this particular person, they are so, so, talented and great.

People who don't follow stars, will never understand fans, because they have not experienced before, never liked before, never empathised before, so they can never understand how we feel joy from our idols' success.

Ending soon, though I'm writing this because someone wanted me to write something about him, but I'm feeling especially happy after writing this, writing for Wu Yifan, there is something satisfying from this.

Something from me; Happy Chinese New Year!

Some clarifications to do here.

Firstly, I'm not a fan base or nor do I see myself as a translator per se. I am just a normal fangirl who happens to know both Mandarin Chinese and English and some basic Korean, that's all.

And I won't reply mentions, ask, about how I think who and who in the fandom are like. Because I don't know them. Also, you guys might know that I've only joined the Twitter side of the fandom less than two months ago. So I am new to the different "famous" accounts and can't judge or give my opinion.

I am neutral when it comes to the "politics" in the fandom. So feel free to inform me when I do something wrong or have offended anyone unknowingly. This fandom is really messy so I'm sort of on my own for now.

Before that I was just fangirling by watching videos on Youtube, getting updates from my p/a. Until I began to go on places like Weibo. I started by chancing upon a really touching message written by a Chinese fan and I thought this must be made known to more EXO fans. So I translated my first EXO related content. Some of you may have seen it before, it is the long text titled "Just that in the next life, it will be my turn to give you courage.." I posted some bits on tumblr, and that was when I reactivated my tumblr and started to get more active. Eventually more and more good articles came, and I got to follow some of the sources on weibo.

My original intentions still remain the same, unchanged.

Which is to let more ifans to be able to read meaningful content regarding our boys. One of the reasons I decided to translate and update with a fandom account is that I've seen too many people who translate selectively, for their own fame, things that doesn't help our boys at all. Hence I've decided to provide my own.

Meanwhile, I don't crave for fame and hope that my followers will reply when I ask something because I don't like the feeling of talking to a wall. I am a human, not just a fandom account. However, credits are necessary.

Some people ask if I can feel my account becoming "famous" as the number of followers increase. Well, yes and no.
I still remember how it was like when the number of followers was floating between 10-12
then 30, then 50, then 70, 90, 100, 140, 150, 180, 200, 210..
The feeling is amazing, I agree.
It is the feeling of people of the same interest and passion gathering.

I appreciate every single one of you, because it is not easy for people of different nationalities and cultures to come together. I'm here as a friend.

Therefore I don't feel sad when people unfollow me. Because I rather have a small group of followers who like me for the way I am, than me trying to please everyone. 

I do take note of those people who constantly favourite silently :) It's sweet. Nevertheless, this doesn't mean that I don't appreciate those who speak up. I treasure each and everyone of you the same way. People who mention me do two main things: keep me away from boredom, and keep me in check.

There will be times I make a mistake, and I need you all to tell me.
Oh, and this brings me to another point.
For those who are curious as to how I translate, here's a short summary.
I translate everything, BUT I will omit parts whereby it is just the fan's perspective/feelings because fanaccounts usually tend to have exaggerations, and are easily mistakened and misinterpreted by the readers. Parts whereby it is too personal, negative or subjective are censored out as well.
All in all, I do, do some filtering on my own.

I rarely write long weibo posts but I'm doing this now because of the many fans who requested. A few days ago I was just asking my sister if Zhang Yixing and EXO are popular, and my sister told me yes, and I'm already very happy.
I'm not into kpop but because of Zhang Yixing, I do check up on exom's related news time to time.

A few days ago I sent a birthday wish on Weibo to my friend and everyone spotted the predebut Zhang Yixing in the picture, so people wanted me to share a bit on Zhang Yixing, so here I am.

I was his schoolmate since Junior High, and at that time he participated in a Hunan Channel Programme called Star Academy.

He was always carrying a guitar with him everywhere in school.

Then in Senior High, we always play basketball together, and that was when our friendship began to blossom, on the basketball court.

And then he joined the Dance Society and our interactions increased, since we have more common topics to chat about. Then, both of us dance popping.

But just as we got closer, he went to SM to become a trainee. he has returned a few times during the trainee period, and everytime he came back to visit we could feel an obvious change in him, becoming more and more mature. The most impressive time was the last few times he came back and told us, "You all must learn properly, my path is too tough, it's just that I have no means to backtrack."

But after a while, he didn't have that much complaints, as if he has completely adapted to the life overthere. Occasionally we would communicate through phonecalls, and he would talk to me about his recent life and some stuff happening in the company. But I've forgotten the details so I apologise for this...

As his friend, seeing so many people supporting him is a happy thing. And I wish he will become more famous~

Zhang Yixing working in SM is quite tough, he told me he is often the first one to reach the dance practice room, and the last one to leave. Practically waking up 7am in the morning and returning to the dorm at around 12am. Everytime he would tell me that his dancing skills has improved, how he has levelled up to another class, and eventually through his hardwork he upgraded to class A. He told me this was the best dancing class in SM~

When I was in Senior High Grade 2, he came back for our Dance Society showcase, and we prepared a dance together, and under our friends' instigation we danced "Nobody" together at the showcase....

I don't know what else to say, I feel that you guys seem to know more about Zhang Yixing than I do. I also don't know what things I should say.

The most recent phonecall was when their single History was out. He asked if I felt that his dancing has improved, and how did he fare. I remember telling him that he was pretty good, better than everyone else. He also asked me if is it true that the other members are too handsome and I cannot see him anymore.. I remember answering that despite that there's so many people, I can only see you.

Anyway, I just hope that everyone can continue to support Zhang Yixing, he will be happier, I guarantee~ And I feel if you like someone because of their looks, this "like" won't last long~ So everyone can focus more on Zhang Yixing's character, talents, or what now~~

It seems like many of his fans are still students, I hope you all won't forsake your studies for him~ If you study hard you may come to our alma mater to study. Our Hunan Shifan University Attached High School is one of the nation's top schools~ HAHAHA~

Oh ya! Many people think that he looks very different from when he was in Star Academy, I would just like to ask you, to compare your own photo from when you are 12 to your current photo when you are 20 years old, and see if you are still the same. As long as you control your diet, and dance the whole day, you will be as slim as him.

KPOP, just a passing fad?

A walk along the streets of Ximending in Taipei, or Bugis street in Singapore, you can hear KPOP songs blasting everywhere.
2012 isn't just about the rise of South Korea's largest Chaebol, Samsung, but also another cultural aspect of the said country.
Hallyu, an affectionate term for Korean wave, has its strongholds in Asia and is even venturing into the West. And it has been powered by mainly KPOP in the recent few years.
To the public, it seems like the world was suddenly infected with the KPOP virus overnight.
Australia's PM even described it as an apocalypse. (=.=)
Sure, it has definitely gotten big, swarms of people started jamming to Korean hits, going online to learn the language, following Korean fashion.
Suddenly, everything Korean-related are starting to emerge, from skincare products to fashion products.

I'm going to say this straight- I don't like it when people say that "KPOP is a fad, why do you like it so much? It will die off anyway."

There are, many presumptions in this statement.
1. They assume that we like KPOP because it is popular. WRONG.
2. KPOP is a fad. WRONG.
3. KPOP will die off. WRONG.

Am I delusional?
Well, let me try to explain.

Many are puzzled by the sudden popularity. Why, they ask themselves.
Why is this //Asian// culture suddenly well-liked? Why is that so, so many people are in love with it even though they don't speak the language. Why is something not mainstream, not in English, famous in the first place?
Ah... Just a bunch of teenagers going crazy over some pretty males and barbie looking girls baring their bodies. They are most probably plastic, afterall. With no talents. Just an empty vase.
As stereotypical as it seems, it is really the popular opinion held by those who don't know how to appreciate this cultural phenomenon.
They term it "craze", or "fad".
"Something that will be over in one or two years."

A touchy topic, and a broad one, too.
So I will start by addressing the first presumption. That all kpop fans like kpop because it is popular, because it is the "in" thing right now.

Surely, many of us KNOW kpop because of the wave. But the thing that caught our hearts was the story behind it.
The story that started years ago, when our idols were just kids. Kids our age, or even younger.
They were small kids with big dreams. Dreaming to stand on the stage.
They dared to pursue it. They trained hard, real hard.
Fell, injured, cried, missed home, and lesser sleep.
They practically didn't get to enjoy the childhood that other children their age had.
Their hearts are just as weak as ours, but their love for music didn't falter.

Then when they debuted, and became famous, they had to face hatred from people all around the world.
Whereas for those groups that just started, we are here to support their dreams.

Loving kpop includes loving the idols. The tradition, the culture.
The story doesn't end here.
And we want to be part of it.

So think again if you say that they are not singers.
Yeah, they are not singers because they are more than that.

They are singers who can also dance, entertain, perform, and most importantly, touch hearts of people with different cultural backgrounds.
KPOP is not about singers, it is about MUSIC.
Music that doesn't need the words for you to understand the song.
Because you don't read music, you listen, and you feel.

When words fail, music speaks.

The second presumption is albeit in between the first and third, but what I can say is that, KPOP has been around for MORE THAN A DECADE.

As the current generation of fans gets older, they don't show their love for the idols that much anymore. Afterall, they have to move on to other things like their careers, family, etc
Have you seen your parents singing along to the oldies?
Yes, that's right.
The love doesn't die. It is just the way we will "fangirl".

And for this, I'm going to bring up H.O.T. They are the first generation idols, debuted in year 1996, just a year after I was born.
KPOP began around that time. Fan support with colours, balloons, fanchants already started.

They were the biggest group during that time. They were the inspiration of the current generation of idols.
Our idols grew up listening to them, and they were one of the reasons why they wanted to be a performer on the stage.
And they eventually did. Becoming the ones standing on the stage now.
And the cycle CONTINUES.

Regarding the part on liking them for the looks- if we like them just for the face, there are tons of better-looking girls and boys out there, why stick to just one group?
Because we kpop fans love them more than we love their looks.
Their personalities they show on variety programmes, the way they look onstage and off.

The support goes beyond the music, the sales, and all; we love THEM.
Some may start calling us crazy, wondering why we love strangers, people who don't even know us.
This part is tricky to answer, and I can only reply, "You will know, once you know what is love."

Last part of this OP-ED. Will KPOP die off?

 Look at Girls' Generation. This is their 6th year running, after debuting with Into the New World in the year 2007.

People thought their peak was over. People said 2009 and Gee was their peak.
But year after year, comeback after comeback, Girls' Generation only continues to prove them wrong. Genie, Oh!, Run Devil Run, Hoot, The Boys.
Japanese debut, albums, certified Gold, then Platinum. Concert tour, countries after countries.
And now, 2013, just when people thought they couldn't get any bigger, they broke records once again with their new release of I Got a Boy.
15million views in just 3 days. Faster than The Boys, faster than Twinkle.

Yes, eventually they will grow old. Eventually, they have to walk down the paths of their seniors, to give way to the rising young stars.
But fans will stay.
Because as KPOP fans, we do know the real reason why we like KPOP.

Last day of 2012

Hmmmm... Time sure flies, huh? -I bet I've said this sometime somewhere before.
Where was I a year ago? What was I doing?
What was I wishing for? And did I achieve what I wished for exactly one year ago?

Well, I didn't do anything great and mindblowing this year, but it was still as eventful and it has been a busy year for me. Let us rewind and revisit my 2012 life again. ;)

  1. January- My first step into JC
A year ago, I was still enjoying my holidays, albeit excited for the new JC life ahead.
New friends, new environment yada yada. Oh yeah, and the new uniform as well.
The transition was okay, since the people you see around the school are still the same few.

2. March- Adapting to failures
You know how you always tell yourself, "I'm gonna work hard this year" and then end up playing and screwing up your results?
That was practically my story.
Things were not as easy as I thought it would be, and my studying style in secondary school is not suitable for JC. It just doesn't work this way.
I was suffocating. The amount of tutorials you have to do each day, the number of post-lecture tests, lecture tests, class test...
9 out of 10 papers I receive back is a number less than 5 (out of 10).
A total failure. And I was getting used to it already.
No longer was I aiming for As.
I just prayed hard to pass.

3. April, May- Fangirl is born

EXO debuted. 8th April. I was introduced to a group of twelve boys whom I never knew were going to change my life dramatically. It was, and hah, still is, my first time officially fangirling over a boygroup. I created a tumblr account for them, then weibo, then renren, pretty much everything you can think of. Just to get closer to them. Beijing or Seoul.
Gotten more reasons to smile and tear.

4. June-August- CCA
At the beginning of the year, I was struggling with my CCA choices. Ended up with three and among the three, YLEP was the most fulfilling.
I like it when my schedule being packed. It gives me the feeling that I didn't waste my time, and my year was spent well. This could be said for my year as a whole. MPS and peer tutoring sessions on Mondays, and the Communibake mega project, all helped me gained experience in things I never knew and never learned before. Oh and the National Day Dinner as well.

5. Sept-Oct- Promos
I was so pessimistic then. Totally prepared to retain and I told myself and the people around me, I would then choose to move on to poly. It didn't happen in the end. I managed to scrape through without needing to take a single retest. But I somehow hope it happened though.
I chanced upon a page in the magazine a few days ago, and saw this.

This is like, my DREAM COURSE. With this, I can throw away whatever I'm studying now, PCME. Guess fate has its own plans.

6. Nov- When dreams began to be clearer
Maybe as an Aquarius, I tend to dream and fantasize a lot. But as an Aquarius with bloodtype O and born on 7 Feb, I am the one who is creative, idealistic, but yet pragmatic at the same time. (Or so the books and internet say.)
I think I know where to go now. (see my older post about "What do you want to be")
Yeah, this holiday I've been spending quite some time (no, just an hour and a half actually) reading my horoscope. They are kinda true.

Despite your amiability you are also quite a private individual who occasionally prefers solitude and chooses his or her friends carefully. 7. SMTOWN.

This was it. Maybe the highlight in my entire life..
This concert solidified my love for KPOP, and SMTOWN.
Experienced what it is to be a real fangirl.
Standing outside the hotel for 5 hours, watching rehearsals at night by the bay, waking up early in the morning to queue for merchandise, screaming the names of my biases in the rain, waving my lightstick, smiling in the midst of 24thousand fans.

My life is complete. Well, not.
I have a new goal now. :)

8. Dec- Full time KPOPPER
Spent most of the time checking twitter updates, and blogging about them. Was so into the fangirling mood that I even went for G.NA's fanmeet.
Created a twitter fandom account, just to entertain myself and to stop annoying the nonkpoppers on my first acc's tlist.
I was pretty much in the embracement of KPOP. Everyday.


As you can see, 2012 was full of KPOP in my life. It made my life colourful.
Brought me hope and laughter, and tears.

As for this blog, it sure has shifted its focus to more KPOP related stuff. And if you guys have noticed, I added a SCM player to the blog! It's at the bottom of the page, and what I like about it is its simple design, and it only takes up a small part of the blog, and the best part about it is that, even if you move away from this page to view my previous posts, it won't restart itself. :D

Isn't my choice of music great? (Okay, don't want to be judged, pretend I didn't ask that.)
I've changed my blogskin also, after a very long time. And changed my header twice! 

And this, was what I've written on the last day of 2011, titled, well, "the last day of 2011".

Guess what? I think my command of the English language has deteriorated. D:

I haven't got a crush on my seniors, but as I was watching this, I held the perspective of a fangirl.

I guess this is how I will feel if I were to get married and say goodbye to my crazy fangirling acts.

Did the various times of the year come flashing back to you? ;D

2012 has been an exciting year, with a lot of debuts. Notice how this mashup alone has many songs released by rookie groups?

Though many criticise that this year was saturated by debuts, 2012 saw many good debuts. The new wave of idol groups have substance and talents. Well-sung lives, synchronized dancing, things that we used to be raving about are all present in the new groups.

Short sighted view might be that this is a turnoff because it is just too much, but if you consider this in a long run, KPOP is actually improving itself in terms of quality and not just quantity. KPOP is being pushed to a higher height with this new batch of idols and increased competition. 

Remember, we want to keep KPOP going. 

Just hope that the idols don't get too stressed up though.

Anyway, Merry Christmas and 2013 will be a better year! With GG's I Got a Boy comeback and all.
